For the research of this episode about Indonesian revolutionary culture in 1946, I mostly turned to the diaries and writings of those who were there. Reading the untouched experiences was so absorbing and allowed for writing a bottom-up narrative. Something that didn’t make it into the video was the work of Chairil Anwar, a poet who died young a few years after the War of Independence. Dwelling about the life and death of the individual during the revolution, his poetry defied Indonesia’s antagonists. In his poem 'Notes for 1946', he writes of how it felt to be among the young generation of Indonesia: ‘We – running dogs, hunting hounds – we get to see only a moment of this drama we play in.’ I’d definitely recommend reading his work if you’re interested!
Cheers, Izzy.

No offense, but both the Dutch and Belgium powers back then seem very… Wicked? Maybe that is the word. Unable to withstand the Nazis, unable to fight with the same energy and ruthlessness on their home ground. But, here they are, halfway around the world, waging brutal and limitless war against a previous colony that is obvious that will not submit. Even the French look like that sometimes. At least the British could argue their continued fight…
The smaller European colonial powers (Dutch, Belgians and Portuguese) were even more brutal, thieving and barbaric than the bigger ones (Brits, French and Spanish).
Great documentaries sir.

If WWII had taught the world anything it would be that colonization was very wrong. And as such, all colonized places such Indonesia, Vietnam, Virgin Islands, and so on and so on should have been given back to the natives immediately following the end of WWII. It was just simply the right thing to do .
My grandpa is one of the young fighters. He held machine gun when still middle school, as student army (tentara pelajar). I heard story when his friend died by his side.

Thank you for making this informative documentary that is rarely understood outside Indonesia in such detail and with local perspectives. Also, you chose a very cool narrator, with an awesome jacket.
