Inflation numbers Down; grocery prices: biggest drop in five years.

NEC Director Kevin Hassett: “Inflation was down, way down, in the CPI report today and it was the month of April where we had about $20B in tariffs. And the story that everybody’s been saying is those tariffs are going to cause prices to go way up.”

U.S. egg prices nosedived by 12.7% in April, marking the steepest monthly decline since March 1984, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data released Tuesday.

Inflation has fallen to the lowest level in more than four years as April’s Consumer Price Index smashes expectations for the third straight month in President Donald J. Trump’s Golden Age.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Grocery prices saw their largest decline in nearly five years.
  • Gas prices fell for the third month in a row.
  • Egg prices saw the largest one-month decline in more than four decades.
  • Workers’ real wages are up 1.9%, increasing each of the last three months.
  • Prices for airfare, energy, hotels, and used vehicles are all down compared to last year.

  • Bloomberg’s Augusta Saraiva: “US inflation rose by less than forecast in April amid tame prices for clothing and new cars, suggesting little urgency so far by companies to pass along the cost of higher tariffs to consumers.”
  • Investopedia Editor-in-Chief Caleb Silver: “The smoke was much worse than the fire … A big part of that was the drop in gasoline prices. This is very significant for households … That drop in gasoline and energy prices — a big deal.”
  • Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo: “Oil is down, eggs are down, food is down. We’re seeing that reflected, so all that hysteria over tariffs is not showing up in these numbers.”
  • USA TODAY: Inflation eased to 4-year low in April as Trump’s tariffs took effect, CPI report shows
    • “Prices for groceries, including eggs, used cars and airfares all fell sharply.”
  • Bloomberg: US Consumer Prices Rose Less Than Expected in April
    • “The pace is the slowest since the sprinsg of 2021 when inflation broke out in earnest.”
    • “Grocery prices were down 0.4% on the month, and eggs fell 12.7%, the most since 1984, validating some of President Donald Trump’s messaging.”
  • NBC News: April consumer price index report shows inflation dropped to slowest pace since 2021

CNBC: Inflation was slightly lower than expected in April as President Donald Trump’s tariffs just began hitting the slowing U.S. economy, according to a Labor Department report Tuesday. The consumer price index, which measures the costs for a broad range of goods and services, rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2% for the month, putting the 12-month inflation rate at 2.3%, its lowest since February 2021, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. The monthly reading was in line with the Dow Jones consensus estimate while the 12-month was a bit below the forecast for 2.4% (CNBC).

Bloomberg: In fact, it was the third-straight month US government inflation numbers were lower than forecast (Bloomberg).

Supermarket News: … the largest monthly decline since September 2020. Five of the six major grocery store group indexes dropped, led by a 12.7% decrease in egg prices, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday. The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs declined 1.6% in April after recent increases…. The cereals and bakery products index dropped 0.5% in April, while fruits and vegetables and other food at home fell 0.4% and 0.1%, respectively. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.2% in April on a seasonally adjusted basis after falling 0.1% in March. The index for food, which includes food away from home (restaurants), was up slightly at 0.1%. The news comes as grocery shoppers remain concerned about food inflation, with a growing number putting purchases on credit cards (Supermarket News).
