I think you missed a quite fun fact which is extremely relative to the topic of this video: ARM was initially an Acorn project, but then apple is interested in ARM cpu for their Newton project. Apple and Acorn then created a separate joint venture to better full-filly this purpose: ARM company. At that time, Apple and Acorn each held 43% of the company. So one can say, apple co-created ARM.
I'm not going to need a new computer for several years, but when I do.. the landscape is going to look very different! I hope the rest of the industry can improve as well, because I don't really want to switch to a Mac.
I disagree, AMD CISC is better than Apples RISC ARM.
Its not so simple, you used Intel for comparison and i guess it makes sense since Apple switched from Intel to M1. However, Apple is using TSMCs latest 5nm process node, while intel is stuck on 14nm for last 5 years.
AMD is currently at TSMCs 7nm and its 15w chips trades blows with the 5nm M1. When TSMC gives same silicon to AMD that they gave to Apple, AMD chips will most likely perform 10-15% better on same power.
But i do give Apple props, the big-little design (4 big, 4 small cores) is what is actually making the chip so "efficient" – when you're using the Mac lightly it consumes almost no energy. And this is great for battery life. But again, this is not a feature of "RISC" or ARM, it is doable on CISC as well.
Bottom line, M1 chip is impressive, not because it is using ARM, but because Intel (the main laptop market CPU company) has stagnated last 5 years. I think we will see a market segmentation – low power laptops for plebs will become more ARM based, normal-high power laptops for work/gaming will stick with CISC.
It is just that Intel has makes money and do no upgrade at all of their CPU and at equal frequency there are few power gain. The top engineer has been engaged from Intel to AMD and Apple and these 2 company goes better, no miracle, Intel sigh its own defeat.
On an other hand, a mac or a PC has a complex OS with multi users… while Iphones, Ipad or android is not able then are much faster and lighter. Apple is not the first to do it, they just pack a powerfull CPU and a low range GPU (it is like a AMD 5300 or intel XE performance) Chromebook are like this since a while and Microsoft was working on it since 2 years with qualcom. Note that qualcom has a 48 core server grade CPU based on ARM.
The M1 has literally improved the quality of my life lol, and I'm not even exaggerating. I haven't yelled at my laptop (which is rare) or had the urge to throw it out of the window while running chrome with a bunch of tabs open and 4k video playing in the background ever since switching to an M1 MacBook Pro. The rainbow beach ball of death has yet to make an appearance, even when i'm running some performance intensive tasks/applications. And the battery life… It's freakin insane. I was not expecting this level of performance at all. Apple has truly outdone themselves. Anyone whose skeptical should really consider test driving an M1 MacBook Air or Pro at an Apple Store or Best Buy if you're able to, just so you can get a feel for how powerful these devices are. It's absolutely incredible. The fact that the cheapest MacBook Air can keep up with the Pro model, and a base model Pro can outperform a fully specked out 16inch Pro and an iMac desktop computer is just mind boggling. Apple Haters really have no legitimate reason to hate right now.
Also, great video. Very informative, and I like how you speak in laymen's terms without using super technical language, which makes it easier to follow along and understand.
Nintendo Switch "Pro" next year 2021 will be more powerful than current Switch…It's can play AAA games in stable 1080p60fps in handheld mode with 7 straight hours max settings
All this hate for Apple here in the Comments section. Sad.
I've lived through the Mac-killer tech punditry predictions. I've lived through the QuickTime-killer tech punditry predictions. I've lived through the beleaguered-Apple-is-going-to-die punditry predictions. I've lived through the iPod-killer tech punditry predictions. I've lived through the iTunes-killer tech punditry predictions. I've lived through the iPhone-killer tech punditry predictions. I've lived through the Apple-is-wrong-on-Flash tech punditry predictions. I've lived through the iPad-killer tech punditry predictions. I've lived through the AppStore-killer tech punditry predictions. I've lived through all of this doom and gloom since Apple was about $2.00 or $3.00 per share.
Anyway, the point is that no matter what they do, the haters are gonna hate, egged on by the consistently wrong, exceedingly execrable, digital Wintel/Android felaters known as tech pundits such as John C. Dvorak, Ewan Spence, and the almost always ridiculous Paul Thurrott who’ve been prophesying the end of Apple for as long as I can remember. But, you know, they’re unbiased. 😉
When I was 18 year old learning instruction set and pipelining, I made a RISC pipeline and a CISC pipeline for a complex instruction set. I just found RISC pipeline was more complex but still faster with a 8 band pipeline. I actually thought I made a mistake that time… But now I realise, it was a wasted opportunity to get into ARM company for work…
I am not really a fan of such overstatements. If there is a product in that category that changed the tech landscape it is the Microsoft Surface line and it did so 8 years ago. Tablets with physical keyboard are nothing new. ARM based notebooks are in existence for an entire year now (Microsoft SQ1). Apple has that boring habit to join the party when all tech is already there. Current chip manufacturing processes made high power low energy chips possible and all current flagship chips are capable of powering notebooks and PCs. For years now we have the most powerful supercomputers designed on ARM. In my opinion Apple as trillion dollar company has a huge Research and development problem and being that influential is actually impeding technological progress. Apple is a busyness venture of the 21th century with the tech understanding of the 20th century.
What about the 99% of programs compiled for a x86 target architecture? ARM emulation kills performance, and honestly is less performant – the ISA has less instructions…
@ColdFusion Dagogo Do a video on Whitehat Jr!! It's an Indian company thats scamming parents with unrealistic dreams. People please like my comment so it reaches the top
I disliked the video, not the topic. I don't think I saw a single pc in the whole video. I'm sorry but if your pc stutter opening chrome or running league of legends, you own a paperweight not a PC. If ARM is so great why is it glorified in tests against products that by design throttle the hardware. It neither does ARM or X84, Apple or Intel justice. Obviously Apple strive toward more optimized hardware for the situation, I already assumed they would excel in THAT situation. While the video taught me a lot, what I'm taking away from it is only the everyday pain people experience with paperweights.
Intel has no one but to blame themselves for the debacle. Monopolistic behaviours strangle innovation. 10 years ago, i just assumed everything was powered by intel chips. It baffles me to this day that intel (the largest chip maker at the time) DID NOT venture into mobil chipsets. Thats just pathetic.
Now if Apple resolves their 'us only', 'no repairs allowed', 'planned obsolescence particularly via short-life non-removable batteries' issues…. And their terrible DRM and also app store censorship (and can only get from app store).
I remember you saying like 2 years ago, that Apple should include ARM processor, and now here we are, it happened

So torn on this.
Love ARM.
Love the shift, at last, to RISC.
Love the big performance leap.
Still hate so much of Apple’s business practices.
I'm not going to need a new computer for several years, but when I do.. the landscape is going to look very different! I hope the rest of the industry can improve as well, because I don't really want to switch to a Mac.
Let's calm down… There are no benchmarks or real world numbers yet. We gotta wait and see what it really is.
The intro was a disclaimer he had to do to not upset Android fanboys
the S4 came out in 2013

What's the name of the outro song?
I will wait for the Real benchmarks before believing anything what Apple says about its M1 chips.
Always top quality production!! Bravo!
Other YT Reviewers answers: Damn! How fast this is..!
Cold Fusion bulldozes: Why it is fast…..?
nah man, i trust you to keep me informed to everything i actually need to know

the ending animation of the diamond exploding is wonderful!!!
apple finally shook the world again. And the impact will be seen.

Have a lovely day.
Excellent video. A journalistic masterpiece even!
Hopefully the desktop will finally get out of the Intel/AMD duopoly we had for decades.
You can say that Apple took the RISC

ok ok , this i have to give credit where credit is due !, well done Apple

Love this guy review wonderful
Bit premature to make it out as a massive change but sure… Definitely not part of a very long movement
I've always been a never-Apple person. I don't like being dictated to. They may have just changed my mind.
revolution, finally..
Apple M1 The Start Of The Fall Of X86
🤯
i'm sad because i recently purchased an expensive intel laptop with alot of space for upgrades
RIP DIE.
APPLE OVERRATED OVERHYPED OVERPRICED.
APPLE IS THE BIGGEST PATENT TROLLS .
Pooters
