The sad thing is, if the west wasn't so paranoid, they might have gotten Ho Chi Ming on their side. With him admiring America, they might have swayed him to our side, IF they had just talked to him. They most likely would have been able to set up a real democratic/republic goverement at that time. Though, I can't also really blame them. I hate communism with a passion. The Vietnamese were fighting for independence. Nothing to do with the cold war. The west made it a fight against communism. Rather it was really a fight to prop up colonialism.
Although the French lost, I think their strategy in the 50s in Vietnam is quite understandable. Up to that point, Vietminh had always appeared to be a guerilla force, killing French troops in forests and ambushes. What choices would they have to defeat such an army? Sending patrols in would be suicidal. Therefore, building a stronghold to draw the enemy forces and destroy them was not really bad, especially when considering the French superior weapons and air dominance. The location of the stronghold must be strategically important, so the Vietminh had to attack it. Building it in Dien Bien Phu was not that wrong since it was difficult in that terrain to assemble enough artillery pieces to cause major damage to the fortification. Looking at the battle of Dien Bien Phu from this perspective is quite interesting. Everything the French did there was theoretically correct. Yet it led to their defeat cause they forgot to take into account one big factor that's not in military books: The determination of the Vietnamese people. These are a few points I want to talk about this battle. Sorry for my bad English xD

I have been to Diem biem phu.
It's kind of neat because most people in my country of Canada who are Vietnamese come from the south.
And most of them have never ever been there.
Four people of the north it's almost like a pilgrimage.
It's a hell of a place.
Definitely worth a visit because not too many tourist.
Plus I like seeing places where France got their ass kicked.

By 1979 Sino Vietnam conflict the Same Man and Machine they helped to fight against French Colonial Power and US back Saigon Regime and then Same Man and Machine will turned against Aggresived China
Some of the Vietminh Weapons used against the France Legionaire are WW2 Vintage Weapons some are Captured from the Japanese Occupied Forces and rest are supplied by the US and Captured from the France Legionaire in which stage an ambushed when China supplied the Vietminh US captured weapons from the Korean war .
