  1. Nice video. One thing you left out that I thought you should have mentioned. Was that Iwo Jima saw the longest round the clock carrier ops of the war. 174 hours of attacks on enemy ground forces and shipping by USS Enterprise supported the marines with air support from February 23-March 2. Only to be interrupted by bad weather. The next day operations resumed till March 9 when the USAAF arrived and started using the captured airfields.

  2. I can just imagine Stalin sending a telegram to F.D.R. saying
“plz help us we’re gonna die” and then F.D.R replies saying “it’s okay, we’ve got Iwo Jima, we’re driving past the Urals we’ll be there in 6 months.”

  3. I'm sure I'm missing something, but it feels like the allies could have destroyed the runway by air and then left a few cruisers in the area in order to keep the 21,000 strong Japanese battalion essentially stranded on the island. I guess the idea was to inflict a damaging blow in the hopes to weaken the Japanese resolve, but… damn. What a cost. =/
