Now THIS is reality television I can get behind. ♡
The smile on his face when saying "well actually these two ingredients are laxatives" 😂😂😂👍
I love Ruth. She is the highlight of all the project.
I didn’t know Coldplay was in this
I know Ruth is a historian and all that, but claiming that it was normal to faint from corsets is not true…if you study dress history (a whole other niche in history), you'll realise that of course there were the trends in fashion, but they didn't change the broad practice of corset making…maybe they did faint from other things, but as a woman who was required to work, there were plenty of very minimally constricting corsets that were flexible and fit the wearer perfectly! Good examples of these are Symington Corsets…a corset making brand that actually preserved many of their different corset offerings so they are still accessible for people who study dress history…other than that it is murmured that women just used the fainting in a situation that called for this… if you want to watch some more about busting myths about corsets, go to Bernadette Banner's channel on YouTube, she is a dress historian
45:14 The summary of the medicine industry
Could they not say that depending on the level of humors a person has the side effects, or lack there of would vary. Since in someways it is a balancing of those that cures something, and if the levels are not the same between different people the effects would be different. Since that idea was not yet disregarded yet.
I just realized they missed the opportunity to call the place Goodman Barber and Quick
;D
"It's the Victorian Age, Industrial Revolution, we need an energy source for our new pharmaceutical invention. Something contemporary and exciting-"
"Dog."
11:20 – 11:30 what are those? it sounds like shes saying "centa pods" and captions says "center pods", but I can't find anything for centa pods. Anyone know?
The way the narrator says "the turn-spit dog is now extinct, so Tom is using a Jack Russel" at 40:50 made me chuckle for some reason.
Without resorting to the use of narcotics, the :"Cure Alls" are pretty much inauthentic. It's amazing how necessary Opium and laudanum were to daily life.
I know this has nothing to do with this, but for me, that chemist is hawt ,daddy material, sorry in advance
How did that woman get away wearing modern hair clips?
So all these people just play this role all day long? Is this a real town or what?
So an antimacassar is to protect furniture from macassar hair oil! I never knew.
That's actually the same smell which emanates from urine. It crystalizes on the toilet bowl if not cleaned. I'd guess this was one method of deriving the substance, early on.
54:25 why did that sound so musical? He sounded like he was going to start singing!
Hearing them talk about how regulated medical advertising is in the modern day as an American: lol wut?
Fascinating and good show I like nerding out on shows like this
This show and others like it are honestly so amazing and interesting. They show that history is actually really interesting if explained in the right way. I’m currently planning on becoming a historical fiction writer. The idea of creating a fictional character but in a nonfiction situation that has QUITE LITERALLY HAPPENED is quite honestly my dream.
Also, that dog is freakin adorable.
I have a jack Russell and as soon as I saw them bring that dog out i knew that would be a struggle. They are smart but yeah good luck!
I love history alot.

So, they live like this all day, every day, 24/7-365?
those cure all pills just gave everyone diarrhea haha
My favourite thing about this series, is that it's just a bunch of people nerding out over things they love, and it's awesome!
ruth is annoying
I know a nineteenth century remedy for pain that that lady could use and it don't involve opiods, it's actually thousands of years old. Paul Harvey said it was Hippocrates who first realized the benefits of the willow bark for pain. Willow bark has a compound called salicin, something similar to aspirin.
The military could tell you that the closest thing to a cure all is Motrin and water.
I find it simply hilarious that people STILL sell those “cure-all” pills and STILL make huge profits using big promises, exotic names, and cheap ingredients
The scene between Ruth & her daughter explaining about using smelling salts was priceless!!😁😂😂
I love how they actually do this not just talk about it
forget the meds.. horse is gonna die if you let him drink that green water!! :/
ugh.. music is so loud, you can barely hear the narrator… frustrating!
sometimes there was something to say about placebos, sometimes just thinking you're getting the right treatment makes your body heal itself.
This is so entertaining, they are having so much fun 🙂
Bernadette Banner anyone?
I love learning about different eras and love learning anything about England. We seem to take just about everything for granted now adays.
Out of all available herbs and their varied uses that actually positively impact health… Why this doctor chose 2 laxatives….glad hes not my pharmacist
fainting spells, caused by tight corsets…or the lead in makeup…or the mercury…or the arsenic in the fabric of that pretty green dress…or…or…
